Skywheel at Night

Skywheel viewed from the side -- NEX-5 & Sony 16mm Pancake

Took the kids to Niagara Falls for a couple of days this long holiday weekend.  As usual, everything is expensive in a tourist area like Niagara Falls, but the kids had fun.  We took a walk at night around Cliffton Hills and the Sony 16mm lens came in really handy.  I could shoot hand held and still got sharp pictures.  I have heard a lot of bad things said about the 16mm f2.8 lens, but I really like this little pancake.  It's very sharp in the center at f2.8, and quite acceptable at th edges stopped down.  For the money, it's a good deal.

  1. I have that lens too and don't disagree with these comments. However it certainly isn't anywhere near as good as using a NEX with Voigtlander M/LTM wides.

  2. For sure. There are compromises for both lenses. What I am trying to say is that it's completely an ok lens for everyday use and most people will be happy with the results, given the price point and what people are expecting from it.

  3. I found the 16mm disappointing at best most of the time, and wonder why Sony have still no great lenses for the NEX yet.

Come on Sony we need a nice quality Lens!

  4. The rumoured E-Mount Sony/Zeiss 24mm is supposedly coming, but then again, it won't be cheap.

  5. I have to agree! This lens is great for what it is intended for. Wide angle for PJ/party pictures. Its nicely sharp in the middle at any aperture.
