Schneider-Kreuznach Retina-Curtagon 28mm f4

Picked up this lens at the last camera show, and it is my widest Kodak Retina Mount lens.  I don't believer there are wider lenses than 28mm in this mount, and all but the Schneider 50mm f1.9 are f2 or slower.  Voigtlander also made some lenses in this mount and they seem to be more followers than the Schneider versions, and their lenses cost more too.

This particular 28mm f4 lens isn't that great, from the very short time I have used it.  Similar to the Schneider 50mm f2.8 that I used, which means the corners are a mess, but pretty sharp in the center of the frame.  Even with the Micro 4/3 camera, the edge is not great.  So, I guess using it for landscape photography is out of the question.

This will be my last Retina mount lens, at least for Schneider.  May try a Voigtlander 35mm, as I heard it's pretty good.  I have the 135mm f4 Color-Dynarex, which is not bad at all.  One of the compelling reason to collect them is because they are so well made, and tiny, and they are all in chrome finish!

  1. Hi, very nice and inspiring blog, i've arrived here looking for information about this same Lens, the Schneider-Kreuznach Retina-Curtagon 28mm f4, which i have the fortune to found at my boyfriend's father house. As I have 4/3 camera, and you are using the lens with the G1 I wanted to ask you which adaptor should i use to mount the Schneider Retina on my Panasonic G10, thanks in advance for the usefull information.

  2. Hi Clara, there are native DKL to M43 adapters on ebay but they tend to be pricey. I actually used two adapters on the G1 with this lens: DKL to EOS and EOS to M43, because I was using this lens on my Canon DSLRs as well. The Canon version of the DKL adapter is quite a bit cheaper.

Here is a list on eBay for the DKL to M43 adapter, at $72 which is too expensive in my opinion:

    Good luck!

  4. I think you've got a bad sample. I've done a test on a full frame body (21MP) and result was quite impressive, very sharp in the center, not as sharp as Zuiko 28/2 on the corners, but still excellent. The only weakness is coating which is not resistant to flare. Great lens for HDR.
