Carl Zeiss Jena Visionar 92mm f1.6 - Photo Set

My Cuban friend Ramon generously gave me two of this prized Carl Zeiss Jena Projection lenses. The 92mm f1.6 is one of them. These are absolutely gorgeous lenses, both in built quality and optically. I believe these lenses are uncompromised design using the then latest techniques and material. The large aperture and size of the lens would make these lenses extremely expensive to make. Perhaps, these lenses were made for theater projections, but that's just my guess. In any case, they are beautiful lenses no matter how you look at them, and they produce very pleasing pictures.

  3. Hi there, I can confirm that the Visionar range was made in the 60/70ties for large Cinema projection and is an advanced 6 lens design, suitable for CCD Imaging down to 6 µm pixel size resolution, quite an achievement at 1.9 aperture. The largest one is the 1:1.9 at 200mm focal lenght, with an 4" aperture an impressive piece of glass, most Visonars were made by Carl Zeiss in Jena at the time but also licensed out to ROW in Rathenow. Best regards, Georg, ex Director of Coating at Carl Zeiss Vision, retired.

    1. Thank you for the truly useful information. Not much has been written about these lenses. A shame, really, as they are beautiful lenses and can produce nice results.

    1. Sorry I haven't shot with this lens much, but I will make a note to shoot it again. It's a "too many lenses" syndrome.
