The Full Frame Sony NEX

The Sony Alpha Rumor site has a posting about the up coming full frame Sony NEX with a SR5 (highest) rating. Generally, posts with SR5 rating are almost always correct.  This is indeed an excellent news.  The only rangefinder style full frame camera is currently made by Leica: the M9 and M9 Monochrom.  Most of us mortals can not afford such expensive cameras.  A full frame rangefinder that can auto focus and thousands of dollars less than the Leica?  What's not to like?

The only question is: How will it be implemented?  The current E-Mount, from the look of it, does not seem to be able to accommodate a full frame sensor.  So a new mount or a modified E-Mount maybe possible.  For me personally, it's not a real problem, as I only have two E-mount auto focus lenses, and I am willing to accept a new mount.

If Sony can pull off this feat with a full frame sensor in an NEX style body, I bet many people will forgo their current big full frame DSLRs.

Interesting and exciting times.  Can't wait for the official announcement.

  1. I really hope this is true, the only thing stopping me believing it is Sony's current development investment in NEX lenses. Sony would have to design an entirely new range of lenses. Just redesigning alpha lenses won't necessarily be ideal either.

    1. Perhaps, the reason for the slow lens introduction, is because Sony is working on lenses for the full frame NEX. Hopefully we will get more details soon. I am very excited about this.

  2. I do hope the full frame is real. As for the E-mount, I'm not pinning too much on the full frame supporting them either. The current E-mount lenses just couldn't make it.

    1. I think the reason Sony is so slow in introducing e-mount lenses is because they are also preparing full-frame e-mount lenses. Current e-mount lenses can be used in crop-mode, a la Nikon full frame. The first e-mount full frame Sony camcorder is just around the corner. We will see how it handles current e-mount lenses.
