Makinon 24mm f2.8 [MD] - Couple of Sample

Makinon lenses are among the cheapest you can find.  For all the Makinon lenses that I have tried, they are just average in optical quality, similar to most third party lenses from the same era.  As far as I know, they never made anything exotic, either in focal length, or large aperture.  But, don't let that stop you from enjoying them.  They are fine when stopped down at f8/f11.

    I know you've posted about your favorite wide angle lenses before. I saw a post at the mf lens forums recently by an esteemed member who had tried a lot of the different 24mm F2.8 and F2 lenses. He said his favorite of all of them is the Nikon AIS F2.8. I have this lens and must say I like it a lot (and like you I have no particular affinity for Nikon). I also like my Tokina 28mm F2.8 RMC OM Mount. Both these lenses are pretty sharp wide open and both allow you to focus very close. Thanks for writing about the Makinon lenses. I've never heard of them before.

      Thanks for the information on the Nikon 24mm f2.8. Unfortunately I have not tried one. If opportunity knocks, I will sure try one in the future.

    I have tried 3 or 4 Makinon lenses (a 28mm f2.8 and a 80-200mm f4.5 spring to mind), and I have found all of them quite disappointing. All of them were bought cheaply ($20 or less), and I ended up selling all of them because the economics of keeping them didn't work. While my lenses only cost $20, I could have bought something with excellent performance in an outdated mount for $40 (Canon FD or Minolta Rokkor), or even kept in Nikon mount and bought genuine Nikkor and still paid only $80. For me, I'd rather pay just a little more and get excellence.

      James, I agree they are not great lenses, but I find them acceptable when stopped down. Certainly not worse than the Soligor, Sun or Accura lenses of the same era.

    24mm 2.8 perfect for street photography and cheap enough if they get knocked about on the tube. Nice street shots above.
