I think canon RAW doesn't use loosy compression.Lens Bubblehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06445561503570800312noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4577546745078520453.post-63364593453120502832014-04-21T10:14:57.031-04:002014-04-21T10:14:57.031-04:00I've recently learned that all current Sony ca...I've recently learned that all current Sony cameras implement two compression steps for RAW files. http://www.rawdigger.com/howtouse/sony-craw-arw2-posterization-detection First the linear sensor output is companded to a non-linear 11 bit curve. Then each horizontal sequence of 16 color values are scaled to 7 bit values between the maximum and minimum. The second compression can cause errors in regions of high contrast transitions. And the first compression may mean you're not getting the full benefit of the sensor.

However, I believe other camera makers also implement various compression schemes for their RAW files which may be similar to what Sony does. In particular, discarding least significant bits from high intensity values shouldn't be visible since our eyes are non-linear. And while the RAW file is not simply the RAW sensor values, it does include more information than the in-camera JPEG.
DarkAlly123_YThttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15565534686839926245noreply@blogger.com
